Development Bank of Rwanda (BRD) continues to light up homes for Rwandan citizens in Ubudehe category 1 following the successful ‘’Cana Challenge’’ social media campaign that was launched in December 2021.
Through different partners that continue to generously contribute towards this challenge – BRD has been able to raise funds to light up homes for 24,000 households, surpassing its initial target of 10,000 households.
Today, 30th June 2022, BRD delivered 1700 to the beneficiaries residing in Gicumbi and Kamonyi districts, which was contributed by the Rwanda Community Abroad (RCA) and MTN Rwanda.
Speaking at the handover ceremony in Kamonyi district, the Company Secretary and General Counsel Gloria Tengera, highlighted that Cana Challenge has enabled 16,494 households to be connected to electricity all over the country since January 2022.
‘’We are extremely thankful to our partners – MTN Rwanda and the Rwanda Community Abroad – for their generous support to the Cana Challenge Initiative which has enabled us to exceed our initial target and connect an additional 1700 households in Kamonyi and Gicumbi. So far, we have connected a total of 16,494 households to electricity and our objective is to increase this number as we continue to receive contributions from different sources. We are committed to supporting the Government of Rwanda and needy communities to achieve our electrification goals.’’
Support towards Genocide Survivors:
During the same event, BRD took the opportunity to deliver solar homes systems to 1000 households – who are survivors of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi –, following a commitment made during this year’s 28th commemoration.
‘’With the help of local authorities, we plan to identify 1,000 survivors (in Kamonyi and other districts), who are in the Ubudehe 1 and 2 Category and support them to access electricity. We are honouring our pledge made during the 28th Commemoration which is part of the Bank’s annual Corporate Social Investment initiatives aimed at improving the livelihoods of vulnerable communities.”
