BRD Supports Dairy Sector
Empowering farmers, pooling efforts and resources
The dairy sector in Rwanda has registered steady growth but remains less competitive in local and export markets. Growth in this sector is crucial if is to contribute to the Country’s objectives outlined in the Economic Development and Poverty Reduction Strategy and the Vision 2020.
In an effort to boost this sector, government through the Rwanda Development Bank (BRD) has embarked on a plan to revitalize the sector. BRD has a long history of involvement in rural development. Since 2006, the Bank has financed the importation of exotic in–calf Jersey and Friesian heifers which were given out to farmers under a loan scheme. The population of exotic cattle in the country stands at 12,000, data from the Rwanda Animal Resources Development Authority indicates.
